Previewing SurrealEstate: “Death Does a Refi”

[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

This week on SurrealEstate, Luke is called upon for his particular non-real estate skillset when Death comes calling for an assist. In a fun bit of casting, she’s played by Hannah Cheesman, who’s a staff writer and producer this season. With “Death Does a Refi,” series creator George R. Olson writes a lovely, lyrical episode that’s scary, funny, and poignant — the trifecta of why I adore this show so much.

While Luke is busy helping Death, and later angling for a heartbreaking favor in return, Susan is out on a real estate gig that she doesn’t realize has a supernatural component. She’s put through her paces and then some with a farm property development deal that soon turns into a little bit of Texas Chainsaw Massacre meets Children of the Corn. Lucky for her she gets an assist from the not-quite-hired Tag (Slasher S4’s Alex Ozerov-Myer).

A former research stringer for Adra, Tag is recommended by a newly returned Augie to backfill Father Phil. While Luke shuts him down during the interview because he never leaves his apartment, Tag gathers enough context from an on-camera side chat between Augie and Luke to suss out Susan’s digits, location, and the background she needs to clear her property and survive the listing.

And Luke’s shiny new client, Tyler, gets a visit from a demon who’s none too happy that he’s back, and issues a stern warning about getting what he came for. It’s a full hour, and Paolo Barzman once again directs — his third in a row this season.

SurrealEstate Season 3 airs Thursdays at 10 pm/9c on Syfy in the US. The first two seasons are now streaming on Hulu. For our Canadian friends, you can catch Season 1 and 2 on Crave, and Season 3 begins this Thursday on CTV Sci-Fi. Here’s a sneak peek, and ICYMI, all our coverage for SurrealEstate is here.
