Previewing SurrealEstate: “Art & Science”

[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

Following last week’s jam-packed episode, SurrealEstate slows it down this week with a double two-hander that finds Luke sequestered with a client and Augie reconnecting with an old friend while Susan no shows and Zooey and Phil hold the fort.

Luke’s case of the week is a haunting that’s upending attempts by an artist, Aurora (Rhiannon Morgan) to leave the oasis that helped her recover and heal and find a renewed purpose after her divorce. It would seem that a debt is now owed, but the question is to who.

Augie takes a motorcycle ride down memory lane to meet with Rochelle (Locke & Key’s Joy Tanner, last week’s mystery caller. Rochelle works at a think tank that we can presume does fairly nefarious things, and is part of a past that Augie gladly walked away from. He’s curious about her call and even more intrigued when an old work terminal Professor Falken‘s him.

What begins as a digital mystery soon reveals itself as something more ethereal and in keeping with Augie’s current line of work. And the visit sparks a renewed friendship and maybe more, although it’s unclear where Rochelle fits around the timing of his marriage and whether/when they had dated or were just colleagues.

Back at the office, Zooey and Phil are swimming in client calls, and soon, all of Susan’s records, as her house takes it upon itself to start making decisions on her behalf. It’s neat episode, and fairly dialogue heavy as Luke and Aurora get to the heart of her mystery — with some legit terrifying moments for Halloween — and Augie and Rochelle discuss the big questions. John Vatcher directs a script by Thomas Pepper.
