Previewing For All Mankind Season 3

Previewing For All Mankind Season 3

[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

In its third season, For All Mankind jumps ahead to the late 80s/early-to-mid 90s and shifts its focus to the race toward Mars. Once again a US vs. Russia endeavor, an unlikely third, and privately held, player enters the chat and then its game on.

Before that, though, we get an establishing premiere that sets the stage for where the characters are a decade on from Season 2, which ended with the funeral for Gordo and Tracy after they sacrificed themselves on the moon. They’re just one of the ghosts of seasons past that linger over the third season.

Another ghost is the damage from the Karen/Danny thing that lingers in Danny’s psyche, compounded by the loss of his parents. It’s a bang-up opportunity for the actors, but it’s difficult to watch and disturbing to have it still be a thing when simply telling the truth way back when, while awkward AF, would have been a healthier choice. Thankfully there are many other threads this season.

The Baldwin family as a whole are on better footing, with Ed given a prime opportunity, Karen turning a professional failure into an epic success story, and Kelly joining the family business. Margo is still at the top of NASA, walking a fine line in her loyalties as protegé Aleida rises in the ranks. Molly, Danielle, and Ellen are also back, each charting their own successes inside and outside the program.

The premiere is a taut hour that immediately drops you back into the lives of the characters we’ve followed for three decades and then tips them off their axis to test how invested we still are. From there, the season recalibrates toward the Mars mission, with the events of the premiere factoring into who does what and where, alongside past secrets, lies, and mistakes bubbling up to the surface.

Joel Kinnaman and Shantel VanSanten were my hook into the series and it’s fun to see them age into characters who are now older than they are in real life. And if you’re a fellow Gen Xer, the 1990s history stuff will test your recall. Now that we’re into the decade when I was in my twenties, I legitimately second guessed myself on some of the world events that I should know (and was relieved I had right the first time).

Once again, this season of For All Mankind will run ten episodes, with new episodes releasing every Friday on Apple TV Plus. Here’s a sneak peek of the new season, which begins Friday, June 10th.
