Previewing Don’t Go Breaking My Heart

[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

Next up in Hallmark Channel’s Spring Fling is Don’t Go Breaking My Heart (which isn’t in the soundtrack), starring Italia Ricci and Ryan Paevey in a script by Nina Weinman directed by Terry Ingram.

Don't Go Breaking My Heart

Ricci plays Miranda Faraday, a relationship expert who runs a breakup bootcamp to help people recover from their splits. Paevey is Ben Myers, a magazine writer who agrees to attend the six-week workshop in a show of moral support for his sister, Kim (Jordana Grace Largy). Before he turns up in class, he and Miranda have a meet cute outside a restaurant minutes after he’s dumped.

They have a heart-to-heart in the valet line and then go their separate ways. When he shows up on the first day, their previous encounter taints the workshop a bit for both of them because they have background intel on each other that they shouldn’t, and there’s already a vibe there that’s not ideal for a teacher/student relationship (there’s another network for that).

Factor into that that the course strongly advises against getting over a breakup with a rebound, a rule Ben’s not terribly concerned about since he doesn’t feel like he’s *really* in the class. He keeps working the charm and eventually wears Miranda down. Once his editor, Leo (Doron Bell), finds out that he’s doing the bootcamp, he asks Ben to spin it for a cover story, with a potential bump to the executive floor–if he exposes Miranda as a sham.

The more Ben woos her, the more he realizes she’s anything but, but he doesn’t tell Leo that. Miranda’s BFF and business manager, Chloe (Caitlin Stryker), likes the idea of Miranda finally moving on from her own heartache, but once Miranda finally gives in, Ben’s original motive comes to light, making things very messy. It also undoes for both of them the emotional growth their connection to each other provided.

Don't Go Breaking My Heart

It’s a really charming movie. Ricci and Paevey have a good time together, and they’re joined by a terrific ensemble. I always enjoy Largy and Stryker, and they’re joined by other regular Hallmarkies Matthew James Dowden, Beverley Elliott, and Tiffany Mo as Bink, Helen, and Jessica, three of Miranda’s students. It’s also the first Hallmark movie that I recall filming all over Vancouver’s Granville Island, which sits in the middle of the city, and it and its views are used to great effect throughout.

Don’t Go Breaking My Heart premieres on Hallmark Channel Saturday at 9 pm/8c. Here’s a sneak peek. You can also catch Paevey’s Christmas at the Plaza Friday night on Hallmark Channel at 9 pm/8c.
