[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

Van Helsing takes a time out of sorts this Friday in a quieter Simon Barry-directed episode that finds the crew safely (*cough*) ensconced in a compound run by a Micah (Tom Cavanagh), who seems awfully blasé about the world’s new vampire problem.

Vanessa and Susan immediately have their suspicions, but Vanessa’s are abated by her interest in one of the residents, Theo (Christopher Russell). While she’s making a new friend, Flesh is seeking counsel with Theo and Sam learns the truth about their new hosts and reacts in an extreme way. As luck has it, Mohamad’s strange new friend is also a resident of Micah’s colony, so the band is back together.

Doc is the odd woman out as she finds herself increasingly overwhelmed by her decision to abandon Axel, who we don’t see but I’m not planting the flag just yet on the idea that he’s really dead.

Of course, the shiny, kumbaya-ness of it all falls away pretty quickly when Magdalene (Gwynyth Walsh), a vampire who would seem to have certain privileges, arrives.

I’ve loved Walsh since Da Vinci‘s Inquest and when she’s pop up on The Outer Limits, so I enjoyed her dropping in here to have a little fun as a bloodsucker. I’m always happy to see Cavanagh and after his The Flash role as Harrison Wells, it’s neat to see him take it way, way down to play a very different kind of guy.

There’s a little bit of violence here and there, but it’s an otherwise catch-your-breath outing before the show wraps up with its final three episodes.

Van Helsing airs at 10/9c Fridays on Syfy. Here’s a sneak peek of “Stay Away.”
