Character Development: Damon Tries to be a Better Man, The Vampire Diaries

I don’t know about you but I love the “new Damon.” Yes, he’s in love with Elena. That’s not new. Yes, he seemed to feel something for Rose, although Ian Somerhalder disputes that here. Mostly, I love that he’s conflicted about his true nature. For Elena he’s trying to be a better man and it’s tearing him apart.

Even though I love Elena and Stefan there is something so naughty and enticing about Elena and Damon. Even though Elena has said – more than once – that she could never be with him I think even she is beginning to doubt her words. Stefan is the safe brother. Yes, he’s a vampire so you can’t say he’s predictable but he’s regular as clockwork compared to Damon. With Damon, I don’t think it’s just his bad-boy image that gets him all the girls (although that certainly doesn’t hurt). Despite the persona he puts on he cares, and he cares deeply. He seems to be thinking before he acts because he does care what Elena thinks. He has to pretend and compel people to hide his true feelings because he doesn’t want their pity or sympathy. He wants to not care, but with Elena in his life that’s become impossible. And it looks like all of it is starting to take a toll on him. Who does he really have to talk to? Nobody. Damon doesn’t have friends and he certainly can’t talk to Stefan about this. I think if he continues to hide his feelings, he’ll snap and I can’t wait for that to happen.

What does the future hold for Damon and Elena? I don’t know but it’s fun to speculate. I can’t imagine Elena doing anything to deliberatly hurt Stefan. I wonder what – if anything – it would take to break these two up again. If Damon actually does become a better man, I don’t think Elena will be able to fight her growing attraction – and she’s definitely attracted to him. Yes, Damon has done some heinous things but it’s human to forgive and Elena is still (and hopefully forever will be) human. I can see a day – maybe not so far in the future – when Elena lets their friendship turn into something more. And I can’t wait to see that.
