Kara’s 2011 TV Goodness All-Stars: The Good Wife’s Christine Baranski

I love that Christine Baranski is Emmy-nominated for her tough, principled, and surprising role as Diane Lockhart. Not only is she a (sort of) mentor to Alicia Florrick, but she’s the kind of partner Will Gardner needs to keep him in line. But even more than that, Diane is a woman who’s had to give up on some of her dreams – a family, a husband – to have a successful career. But you’ll never hear her complain about the choices she’s made.

Diane Lockhart has had a very interesting year.

  • She considered going out on her own and starting a new law firm.
  • She thought about becoming a judge.
  • She reconnected with old flame Gary Cole‘s Kurt McVeigh and flirted with chucking it all to be with the man she loved.
  • She told Alicia and Kalinda to “make it better.”
  • She demanded that Will end things with Alicia.

I take every opportunity I can to sing the praises of series creators Michelle and Robert King. It’s from those fertile minds that a character like Diane Lockhart was born and continues to develop. But I don’t think this character would be nearly as intriguing, or fascinating, or brave if it wasn’t for Christine Baranski’s fierce portrayal of her. Although I was aware of her before this role, I feel like Diane Lockhart will become a defining role in her long career. I hope she gets the opportunity to play this role for many more years because I can’t wait to see what comes next.

The Good Wife airs Sundays at 9/8c on CBS.
