[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

The Strain begins its final season this Sunday in an episode that moves the action forward several months past the detonation of the bomb and finds that our core characters have fanned out from New York. To begin, we only pick up with half of them–Eph is in Philly, Fet and Quinlan are in the Dakotas on a mission for Setrakian, and The Master/Palmer, Eichorst, and Zack are reaping the rewards of their destruction in Manhattan.

If you think of the first three seasons as pitched at the precipice of an abyss, Season 4 leaps wholly into it, with a significant portion of the population acquiescing while others fight to survive outside that conformity. There’s a Wild West aspect to that as some folks have retreated in shelter and others have begun to survive any way they can, which includes caving into baser instincts.

It’s not all kumbaya in New York, though, as Eichorst bristles at yet another new Master after being passed over again, and he struggles to keep Zack right where the Master wants him. On the new character front, we meet The Last Ship‘s Rhona Mitra as Charlotte Watkins, Fet’s new friend met along the way West from New York.

It’s a solid start to the final 10 episodes, and I’m very glad that we know going in that this will be it. The first one is a bit of a stage setter, but it works, and it could even double as a pilot of sorts for those who’ve never seen the first three seasons. There’s something to be said, though, for following everyone this far and seeing it through to the end. We’ll catch up with Setrakian, Dutch, and Gus in the coming episodes.
