This weekend’s Hallmark Channel romance is another book-centric outing (which is sort of a neat pattern after Perfect on Paper, Looking for Mr. Right, and A Novel Romance) that tests fairy tale ideas about love and proves them out as false–in a good way.
In Love By the Book, Leah Renee (Satisfaction) plays Emma, an idealistic and whimsical bookstore owner who’s balancing a new romance alongside her business goals and soon realizes that who she thought she wanted and who she really needs are very different. Joining Renee are Ryan Bittle (All My Children), Saving Hope‘s Kristopher Turner (who I’ve dug since he co-starred in the Canadian series Instant Star), John Schneider, Stefanie Powers (last on Hallmark Channel in A Ring by Spring), and Cherilyn Wilson, who’s appeared in episodes of Stalker and True Blood.
David Cass, Sr., who’s helmed a handful of movies for Hallmark, directs a script by new writers Jeff Bonnett and Abbey Cleland, who share credit with Jennifer Notas (Christmas Under Wraps).
It’s a sweet story, and you’re going to be a few steps ahead of Emma as she finally catches up, but it’s an enjoyable journey, especially if you adore the charms of independent book stores. One side note–you may have come across this movie on PiXL, where it was released as Mr. Fiction last October.
