Motive became summer appointment TV for me and I’m so glad U.S. audiences had a chance to find this show and this cast, and the extended Canadian goodness. What I’ve liked so well about the first season, aside from the “can I just watch them all day?” chemistry of Kristin Lehman and Louis Ferreira, is the way the episodes unfolded so that even though you knew the who, the rest of the case was a carefully crafted surprise.

There were a couple of times where it was unbearably sad to see that one bad decision started the whole thing rolling (and this was why I couldn’t watch Cold Case regularly), and last week’s episode was on the squeamish side (anybody who got wrapped up in Rogue earlier this summer knew what to expect from Jarod Joseph, who played the killer), but for the most part, Motive kept it light because of the relationships between everyone at the precinct and between Angie and her son.

Tonight, we wrap up the first season with two back-to-back episodes.

Here’s what to expect:

In “Ruthless,” Detectives Flynn and Vega investigate the murder of an executive assistant and discover an unexpected link between the killer and the victim…a link that threatens to expose an even more deadly secret. Popular‘s Carly Pope and Cedar Cove‘s Andrew Airlie guest star.

In “The One Who Got Away,” while investigating the murder of a teenage boy, Angie’s experience and training are challenged to right the wrongs of the past and catch a killer before he can kill again. Amanda Tapping (she’s everywhere!) guest stars.

Motive airs an hour earlier tonight at 8/7 c on ABC. Although the series was renewed in Canada earlier this spring, ABC hasn’t made a decision on a second season for the U.S. Here’s hoping they do. I like the pairing with Rookie Blue, which got an early Canadian/U.S. renewal in July.
