Boardwalk Empire “Pilot”

I am fascinated by the history of prohibition. It’s not hard for me to imagine a time in our history when people thought getting rid of alcohol would solve all our problems. I said I can imagine it but I don’t know what they were thinking. I’d call Congress naïve but I know that’s neither accurate nor flattering. But the member of characters aren’t the characters I’m interesting in right now. Meet Enoch “Nucky” Thompson. What’s his first rule of politics? Never let the truth get in the way of a good story. That pretty much sums Nucky up perfectly. He’s going to do what he needs to do to get ahead. And if you stand in his way you might get hurt or worse. Just ask Mrs. Schroeder’s husband.

I loved meeting Lucky Luciano and Al Capone before they really came into their own in New York and Chicago, respectively. I do worry about Jimmy’s association with Al. Al’s such a hothead and they end up killing Rothstein’s men. I’m thinking that isn’t a wise move. And even though Nucky gets a cut of the profits – which he didn’t ask for – I’m not sure Nucky can protect Jimmy should the truth ever come to light.

I’m excited to see Steve Buscemi in such a juicy role. Kelly Macdonald can do no wrong for me. Do you remember her in State of Play? The original British miniseries not the American knockoff. She’s just amazing. And although I’m not usually a fan of Michael Pitt, I liked him here. I found him believable and his background and family situation are pretty interesting. He’s got something to fight for and a lot to lose. We didn’t see too much of Michael Shannon tonight but I’m a fan. He was brilliant in Revolutionary Road (and Oscar-nominated) and I can’t wait to see how this character develops. I’m a little scared of his character’s religious bent, but in a good way.

My favorite slogan from the episode: Lips that touch liquor shall never touch mine.

Did I mention it’s beautifully shot? We expect nothing less from Mr. Scorsese but I thought I’d at least mention it. I’ll see you back here next week.
