[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]
There’s something about the seventh episode in these short-run series now where a pivotal moment happens that resets the board for the remainder of the season. I’m sure the science of the storytelling is documented somewhere, but I don’t actually want to know the mechanics. I’m just generally aware that when that episode hits, there’s going to be something that usually can’t be walked back.
This week’s episode, “Best Laid Plans,” doesn’t do anything that the Fromsville residents won’t recover from, thankfully. But it does give us a couple of important reveals–Sophia has an even scarier skillset than we knew and she’s happy to demonstrate it, and Fatima learns a terrifying new thing about her pregnancy and Smiley.
Aside for the supernatural WTFery happening, there are some deeply human things, too. Boyd leads the charge on a battle plan based on finding the door, and makes a Hail Mary choice about dispensing information that sends Henry into a deeper spiral. That’s not Henry’s only trouble as the effects of Sophia’s mixer last week start to take hold.
Donna is on the mend but not happy about her confinement, and Boyd has to face some truths about his own physical abilities. Jade works on his version of a 3-D map, Julie has a cards-on-the-table conversation with Elgin, and Victor responds to the Miranda news by asking Tabitha for help and revealing his concerns aren’t just about the past and the present.
The episode is full of taut emotional moments and a couple of genuinely frightening monster confrontations. John Griffin and Brigitte Hales wrote the script directed by Jeff Renfroe. With just three episodes left this season after this one, there are still several threads left to pull, and hard choices to be made about what’s in the best interest of everyone and whether a potentially suicidal crusade is worth the risk.
