[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

Penny Dreadful switches things up this week with an episode that takes a break from Vanessa, John, Lily, and Dorian and instead spends some time with Ethan and Hecate and their pursuers in New Mexico and in the shop of horrors with Victor and Jekyll.

The action expands from a conversation set piece to grand vistas (Spain subbing for New Mexico) as Ethan winds his way home and opens up to Hecate, who makes a tantalizing proposal to him after a little demonstration of her abilities, which in my mind reminds him of what he saw with Vanessa but he never says that. We also finally meet Big Bad Dad (Brian Cox).

Kaetenay and Malcolm discuss their reasons for pursuing Ethan as they make an end run around Rusk and his men. Back in London, Victor and Jekyll continue experimenting with test subjects, and it gives Victor enough hope that he shakes off the literal and figurative cobwebs of his stupor about Lily.

The episode marks two firsts behind the scenes, with Andrew Hinderaker, if memory serves, as the first writer other than John Logan to have a written by credit on an episode, and Paco Cabezas directing the first of a handful of episodes he helms this season.
