[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]
Well, that was unexpected. In the closing moments of last week’s episode, we found out Christy’s been hording cash, and she paid Ben’s retainer. This comes to light as said attorney suggests that maybe the best defense is to spin an alternate theory–that Christy killed Ben. And since Christy just had a blow out with him in front of his girls on Christmas Day, he’s not saying no to the idea. I love that the cast and crew have made it very plain they have no clue who did it because multiple endings were shot, so anybody’s guess is good.
“The Son” also had a surprisingly sweet, heartbreaking scene as Ben finally remembered the night that Tom died, and that he’d had a lovely moment with him. The trigger was finding Tom’s tooth in his jacket pocket. The memory loss was from being drugged by a not-so-helpful Dave. It turns out when he staggered to Jess’s, he wanted to warn her that Christy knew about their one night stand.
He let himself in when he saw her asleep on the couch. He turned off the TV and put a blanket over her, and then Tom walked up as he started to leave, so he took him back upstairs to bed. They talk a little bit that Tom lost a tooth and he woke up to see if the tooth fairy came. Ben offers to read him a story and he says no because the characters in his books don’t have a dad, either. He says his dad doesn’t love him and Ben says he does. Tom asks why his dad isn’t there and Ben doesn’t have an answer but does tell him he’d be so proud if such a sweet, wonderful boy was his son. Then he tucks him in and slides a $10 bill under his pillow.
He tells all this to Jess and she’s happy that Tom had one lovely moment with his dad before he died. Ben also lays all of this out of Cornell, shooting her theory to sh-t. Still no Ben/Jess love scene, so I have no idea if that will ever actually make an episode before the show wraps next week, but the promo kids have certainly exhausted it.
Here’s what to expect tonight in “The Mother” — Ben’s discovery in the attic further exacerbates his tension with Christy who, to make matters worse, continues to keep the kids away from him. When Ben finally does get some much needed father-daughter time with Abby at the Christmas fair, an unwelcome guest changes the course of the evening. Meanwhile, after the leak in the crime lab left most of the forensic evidence in Tom’s case unusable, Det. Cornell refuses to sit idly by and wait for everything to be re-tested. She returns to the crime scene, hoping to find something new to drive her towards an arrest.
