[Warning: General spoilers in article, images, and preview.]

Hell on Wheels rolls out of the station this Saturday with its fourth season premiere. A tri-track episode set in Cheyenne, the Hell on Wheels camp, and the Mormon fort, the episode covers a lot of ground for our characters.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Bohannon and his wife, Naomi (now played by MacKenzie Porter), are awaiting the impending birth of their child, but Bohannon is still under Swede’s thumb.
  • Durant, Louise, Mickey, and Eva are in Cheyenne, each with varying degrees of success.
  • Ruth, Ezra, and Psalms are still in the camp.
  • There’s been no sign of Elam.

It’s a solid premiere, with some disturbing moments sprinkled throughout, but it does the job of setting the stage for where everyone is emotionally, several months after scattering to the winds. It certainly takes some characters we thought we knew in new directions. The opening scene is a jaw dropper that I seriously hope was green screened. Familiar face Brendan Fletcher (last seen in Bates Motel) pops up in a small role as an unlikely ally for Bohannon.

Hell on Wheels premieres Saturday night at 9/8c on AMC. Starting Friday afternoon, AMC is marathoning the first three seasons. Click here for details. Check back tomorrow and Saturday for interviews with Jennifer Ferrin and Phil Burke.

Here are a trailer for the premiere, an extended preview of at what to expect this season, and a peek behind the scenes with Anson Mount.
