[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

It’s a ladies night of sorts on this evening’s The Strain as Justine faces what her city has become and emboldened by a very close call, decides there is no longer a line she won’t cross. She also reveals exactly how dark things were for her in the aftermath of 9/11 (hence the episode title).

Back at Fet’s, a very bedraggled Dutch comes home to find Ephram on his own and they bond over booze and grief as she comes clean about her PTSD from Eichorst’s kidnapping.

Fet is busy with Justine and her crew while Gus and Angel learn what it means to be conscripted without the right tools. Setrakian pushes past his rage to help Quinlan sort through a very crucial piece of missing info that the Elders neglected to pass along regarding the Master. Kelly and Zach have to deal with rudderless Strigoi, until Eichorst decides to improvise.

It’s a busy hour that stages where our characters are going, but doesn’t actually move them forward just yet. It is, however, an opportunity for Samantha Mathis and Ruta Gedmintas to just kill it in their scenes, which they do. I love when our genre shows leave room for such rich performances in the middle of chaos.

The Strain airs at 10/9c Sundays on FX. Here’s a sneak peek of “Gone But Not Forgotten.”
