[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

This week on 12 Monkeys, we dive a little into Cassandra’s backstory. In our press call a few weeks back, I asked about Cassandra’s decision to tell the truth about meeting Cole, which, while essentially forfeiting her career, hadn’t also derailed her from still being at the CDC in 2017. Amanda Schull said that would be addressed in the third episode, aptly named “Cassandra Complex,” and she was right.

Here’s the formal logline: A search for the location of the virus leads Cole to 2014, when a dangerous outbreak in Haiti had a devastating effect on Dr. Railly. Rookie Blue‘s Lyriq Bent (who is also in BET’s The Book of Negroes next month) guest stars as a doctor Cassandra meets in Haiti who also had history with Jennifer Goines.

It’s a solid episode, and highlights Cassandra’s state of mind after the kidnapping, and the moment when her PTSD kicked in. We also get a look at memory creation within the context of the show’s science, as 2015 memories are rewritten because of Cole’s travels–and actions–in 2014. We may need a map at some point. Good thing Syfy has one.

The only downside is that Cole and Cassandra are separated for most of the episode, and I missed their interactions together. On the plus side, the scenes they do share are well done as Cole teaches her to defend herself and she sets the ground rules for him before he travels back into her past.

12 Monkeys airs at 9/8c Friday on Syfy. Here’s a sneak peek:
