The Killing Preview: “Reckoning” [VIDEO and PHOTOS]

We’re winding down season three of The Killing (already) and I have to say I’m digging the hell out of it.

I’m not hugely invested in the prison storyline but I think Peter Sarsgaard, Hugh Dillon, and Aaron Douglas are doing very good work there. Where I’ve been very pleasantly surprised is in the arc with Bullet and Pastor Mike and the street kids–I thought that would start to grate, and it’s been interesting that they set up Bullet and Kallie’s BFF bond right out of the gate and then immediately took Kallie out of the picture, making Bullet the driving force to get her back. Bex Taylor-Klaus is new to me but she’s rocking it as Bullet. I liked, too, that they took the time to humanize Kallie’s mom, Danette (Amy Seimetz)–she’s been a sh-t mother, but she wants her daughter back.

And of course, I have nothing but love for Holder (permanently back in his hoodie and jeans!) and Linden. I was a little nervous we were going to wind down the season with Linden held captive, so I’m very glad that was a one-and-done (and oh, BTW he’s NOT the killer) arc. I Tweeted last Sunday that I’d just watch Holder and Linden sit across the table from each other and talk over Chinese food. I just adored that moment back at the house after Linden, still shaky, was on her own at home and Holder shows up with food and really talks to her. That was second to the moment of her rescue on the dock when a relieved Holder just sat down beside his friend and put a hand on her shoulder.

What I’m most pleased about so far, is that the show successfully rebooted after the Larsen case took two seasons. I’m fully aware real detectives don’t get to spend this long on just one case, but for the purposes of the show, I’m impressed that they found a compelling way to bring these characters back into my living room. I’m ready to hear we’re getting a season four–I hope we find out before the end of the season.

Tonight, we’re still at a loss for who’s been killing the women, although Kallie’s mom’s skeevy taxi driver boyfriend looks like a good bet. And the clock is ticking down on Seward’s execution as he’s now desperate to get Linden’s help in exonerating him. We have three episodes left after tonight–but the last two will air back to back on August 4th. Set your Swatch!

Here’s a sneak peek of “Reckoning,” which starts at 9/8c on AMC.
