Guest Star Goodness: Southland “Code Four”

It’s hard to talk about anything other than Moretta’s untimely death in “Code Four,” but there was a lot of good stuff going on in this episode. Two of the guest stars – who I haven’t seen in a while – were a sight for sore eyes. I’ve really missed seeing these two actors on the small screen.

Charles Malik Whitfield

I know I’m not the only fan of Supernatural. You might remember Charles Malik Whitfield as Special Agent Victor Henriksen. At first he was all about hunting the Winchester brothers down and prosecuting them to the fullest extent of the law. But what he saw what they were up against, he changed sides. It was too late for him (and everyone else in that jail when Lilith got a hold of them) but he want down fighting.

In “Code Four” he’s one of the detectives on a case Lydia gets stuck with. Him and his partner are busy playing a video game when Lydia arrives and they want to finish their game before bringing her up to speed. Lydia’s not having it. They don’t seem particularly interested in this case and they don’t come off as intelligent either. The victim is a crackhead, Artis Hayes, and they just can’t be bothered.

Charles Malik’s time on screen was brief but he definitely made an impression. If you’re wondering what he’s been up to lately, I’ll fill you in. He’s had steady guest work but most recently he’s worked on Private Practice, Ghost Whisperer, White Collar, and Rizzoli & Isles.

Percy Daggs III

Similarly, I know I can’t be the only die-hard fan of Veronica Mars. I own the series on DVD and I hope to God they make it into a movie. I’ll be near the front of the line and I might even see it more than once on the big screen. We’ll see if it comes together.  I always loved the relationship between Veronica and Wallace.  They were siblings in spirit and always had each other’s back. It was refreshing.

In “Code Four” our little Wallace has grown up into Wendell, a killer for hire. Sherman and Cooper spot a driver paying a little too much attention to them and pull him over. Not only do they find drugs in his car but Cooper ties him to the Hayes’s death. It turns out he’s the trigger man. He was hired by Hayes’s nephew. The disbute wasn’t over drugs or money. It was over an Xbox. It’s astonishing what people will kill for.

What has Percy Daggs III been up to since Veronica Mars went off the air? Guesting on In Plain Sight and Raising the Bar. I hope we see more of him soon because the wasn’t in enough of tonight’s episode. I know his storyline was minor, but still.

Next week’s episode should be good. I can’t wait to see what the fallout is from Moretta’s murder.
