[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]
SurrealEstate is back at it for Season 3 Thursday night on Syfy, and most of the crew returns for a new season that finds them in a new configuration and a new office following a time jump (and, behind the scenes, a production move from St. John’s, Newfoundland, to Ottawa). Thankfully, the Roman-Ireland team have not missed a beat.
Picking up three years after we last left them (and in real time, 18 months), Luke, Susan, and Lomax are holding the fort managing their slate of metaphysically challenged properties while Augie’s loved up and working for Rachelle and Zooey is a newly minted lawyer. Offscreen, Father Phil is still ensconced in the Vatican. Returning this season, Megan is back in Luke’s life as they figure out who they are as friends.

Right out of the gate, we find the agency crew navigating a ghostly interloper in a house they recently sold – an unusual predicament since the uninvited guest was not an issue when the house was listed. Dividing and conquering, the trio work to both assuage the new owners and keep them safe while also trying to figure out what they missed. And we meet a new player in town with an old tie to Luke who will become a menacing throughline this season.

Out of the office, Susan and Lomax have landed on a fun bestie vibe, and Luke and Susan’s relationship has evolved a bit as she grieves a loss he can relate to. Meanwhile, Augie is experiencing some uneasiness of his own about his career path. And Zooey’s a little wistful, too, when called upon to help out with onboarding the latest receptionist candidate.

It’s a fast-moving episode that acts as both an intro if you’re new around these parts, and sweetly gives a nod to the fans who’ve maintained our ardor and dutifully waited for new adventures. The premiere episode, “Buckaroo,” was written by series creator George R. Olson and directed by Paolo Barzman.

Earlier this week, I chatted with series stars Tim Rozon and Sarah Levy about the new season. I’ll be rolling out pieces of our conversation during the season. Here’s what they had to say about getting to come back. “It was super great. It was like parallel lives. We waited two years before we found out we’re coming back, and then I heard we were moving cities and new crews, and then I got the scripts and it was the same, but they felt different,” shares Rozon.

“It was just very easy to be excited both as a character and a person coming back. And then at the end of the day, [I’m] super lucky I get to see [Sarah] again. Just knowing they were gonna be there is just always such a comfort and kind of an anchor.”
“Getting to come back at all, we’re always just grateful to get another season. I’m so glad that there was enough support that we were able to get another season, no matter where it was. But I was pleasantly, as much as I loved Newfoundland, I was really pleasantly surprised that it was Ottawa,” adds Levy.

“You connect with your crew so much and you bond with your crew. So knowing we weren’t going to see a lot of the same people in Newfoundland was initially disappointing, but then you form a bond with a totally new crew that is equally as great and wonderful and talented. And I was really just excited to get going again and read the scripts and see the storylines.”

“And we know we’re in good hands at all times with George Olson, our creator and our wonderful writers and our directors that we love so much. And the cast on top of all of it. It’s always the best day when we hear that we’ve gotten picked up for another season. I was really excited for a fresh new start.”
SurrealEstate premieres Season 3 Thursday at 10 pm/9c on Syfy in the US. The first two seasons are now streaming on Hulu. For our Canadian friends, you can catch Season 1 and 2 on Crave.
