Warning: Spoilers Ahead

Quite a few things did not go according to plan in last week’s season 3 premiere, but I was not expecting to see Gillian Alexy‘s Annelise murdered. And considering how affected Philip was last season by all the death and destruction he had to participate in and/or see the aftermath of, I was also not expecting him to react so well. Now more than ever it’s important for Philip to develop Yousaf. As the number two in the ISI covert action division and next in line to run the agency, Yousaf is someone they need access to if they’re to keep an eye on the weapons the CIA is running through the Afghan region of Pakistan. Elizabeth was the one who made initial contact, but Philip thought Annelise would raise much less suspicion. The problem? She fell in love and felt the need to come clean to Yousaf.

TV Goodness participated in a press call with series star Matthew Rhys last week. I had the chance to ask him about the aftermath of Annelise’s death.

Now that Annelise is out of the picture, Philip seems to very quickly go with the flow and use her death to his advantage. What’s going to happen with your storyline with Yousaf this season?

Matthew Rhys: “To be perfectly honest, I don’t know where it’s going because it’s resolved in the last three episodes, which we haven’t received yet. It’s as much of a surprise – [Yousaf] gets in and out of the season but nothing of substance – he checks in with Philip and Philip keeps pushing him for information.

The true resolve of what is to happen is in the last three, which we haven’t received yet. So time will tell.  I’m sorry I can’t be any more specific than that.”

How does your character deal with her death and how do we see that play out over the next few episodes?

Matthew: “I’m afraid to say. There’s so much other stuff going on that the resolve isn’t on camera. I mean, it’s like all deaths and it affects him deeply. The eruption leading to it tends to seed and plant itself deeply with Philip and then usually the effect takes hold much later.”

In this week’s episode, Elizabeth and Philip work together to deal with last week’s mission gone wrong, but they’re still struggling to reconcile their increasingly opposing ideologies. Stan welcomes a Soviet defector to America and Nina acclimates to her new living arrangements.
