[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]
After a two-year hiatus, Platonic returns to Apple TV+ on Wednesday for its sophomore season, which finds the BFFs and their crew in a series of voluntary and involuntary personal and professional resets. We begin with Sylvia (Rose Byrne) in full party planner mode for the engagement party for Will and Jenna (Seth Rogen and Rachel Rosenbloom). Of course, this being them, the potentially perfectly lovely gathering doesn’t go to plan.

While such a misfire could derail the BFFs again, this time around, they’re consciously making an attempt at adulting and airing out their grievances in real time, with variable degrees of success. As Sylvia says during the season, in a clip that’s also in the trailer (below), she doesn’t have the time and energy to build a 25-year friendship from scratch with someone else so you work with what you’ve got.

And what she’s got, aside from Will, is a full family life and a burgeoning new career that pulls her away from them and her comfort zone more than she’d like. Her marriage is solid, though, and Charlie (Luke Macfarlane) picks up more of the family caregiver role that she has held for years while she gets her career on its feet. At the same time, he’s feeling professionally restless alongside prepping for his own longheld dream of competing on Jeopardy. And just to keep it interesting, they become accidental custodians of a wandering coyote.

Jenna and Sylvia’s relationship is less forthcoming, until it isn’t, which is complicated because Sylvia’s doing the wedding and Will hasn’t been completely honest about his home life. That translates into the besties sometimes being in full share mode with other people instead of each other, so you know the lid’s going to have to come off that at some point.

Season 2 is a bit less frenetic at the outset since Will and Sylvia have moved past having to re-acclimate to each other after a break, but it’s not without its share of “maybe think that through first” moments, including a very welcome bananas episode for Macfarlane. The side effect of the grown-up events happening for both of them is that the often superficial funsies way they communicate with each other starts to fray and they have to actually talk about real things.

Here’s the formal logline for the season, which brings back Carla Gallo and adds SNL alumni Aidy Bryant, Kyle Mooney, and Beck Bennett as guest stars.: “Co-created, directed and co-written by Nick Stoller and Francesca Delbanco, “Platonic” season two picks up with everyone’s favorite pair of best friends (Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne) as they contend with new midlife hurdles, including work, weddings, and partners in crises. The duo tries their best to be each other’s rock — but sometimes rocks break things.”

The second season of Platonic premieres worldwide with the first two episodes at 12:01 am ET on Wednesday, August 6th on Apple TV+. The 10-episode season runs through October 1st. Here’s a sneak peek.
