Previewing True Justice: Family Ties

[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

Last summer, after Christmas Con Kansas City wrapped, Nikki DeLoach and Benjamin Ayres headed to Canada to shoot an unnamed project that they couldn’t yet talk about because it hadn’t been announced. This Friday, we get to see the fruits of that labor when the friends co-star alongside Katherine McNamara (Love, Classified and Walker: Independence) and Markian Tarasiuk (Welcome to Valentine) in True Justice: Family Ties, the latest entry in consideration of a slot in the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries Mystery Wheel franchise.

True Justice: Family Ties

DeLoach, who is already the co-star of the successful Curious Caterer franchise, co-wrote the film with her writing partner Megan McNulty, and invited Ayres, who had his own mystery series in Chronicle Mysteries (which I still hope we have not seen the last of) to come on board. Here, they appear in an advisory capacity of sorts as a professor and district attorney, respectively, opposite McNamara’s character, Casey a law student determined to prove her brother, Marcus (Sam Ashe Arnold of Are You Afraid of the Dark?), was wrongfully convicted of murder.

The script credit is the second for DeLoach and McNulty, who wrote Christmas for Keeps in 2022 and produced other projects for Hallmark. As Ayres told me last month, it was an easy yes to come play. Nikki called me and said, ‘I’ve got this movie that I wrote that I want you to be in that’s going to shoot next month. Do you want to do it? I’ll send you the script,’” he recalls. “I told her, ‘Nikki, I’m gonna do anything you’re in.’ She said, ‘It’s not the lead. We’re supporting characters,’ and I said, ‘Anything you do, I’m in’ because I love Nikki and she’s amazing.”

The film follows Casey as she crowdsources help from her law school classmates Eli (Tarisuk), Sarah (Chucky‘s Marisa McIntyre), and PJ (Sabrina Saudin of The Boys) and a private investigator friend, Liam (Moonshine‘s Alexander Nunez) to find the real killer. With a tip from Professor Ambrose (DeLoach), they get closer to the truth, albeit at their own peril.

Jonathan Wright directed DeLoach and McNulty’s script. True Justice: Family Ties premieres Friday at 9 pm/8c (note the time change from the holiday films) on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries and streaming on multiple outlets in the U.S. Here are a couple of sneak peeks, plus some behind the scenes shenanigans from DeLoach and Ayres, who had no fun whatsoever.
