Previewing Mystery on Mistletoe Lane

[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

One of the things that’s been fun for me covering Hallmark movies here at TV Goodness for the last 13 years is that the networks tap into a Canadian workforce that’s often recognizable for its genre work, so there’s a lot of cross-pollination. Erica Cerra will always be known to me for Eureka, where she was paired with current Hallmarkies fave Niall Matter. More recently, she’s recurred on Nancy Drew and The 100. Thursday night, she’s back on Hallmark for the first time since 2012’s The Wishing Tree (which is streaming on Hallmark Movies Now).

Mystery on Mistletoe Lane

Mystery on Mistletoe Lane teams Cerra with one of our faves, Victor Webster, in a storybook romance/family film set in an actual storybook house with a mystery that unfolds via a scavenger hunt. Cerra is Heidi, newly arrived in town to be the director of the local historical society. Webster is David, who previously held the job and stepped down amicably to pursue his first passion — contracting as a restoration specialist.

Heidi hits the ground running with a plan to turn the historical society into Christmas central, much to the delight of her office manager Linda (Mary-Beth Manning) and less to the delight of her kids, Annie (Juliette Hawk) and Garrett (Logan Pierce). While David was decidedly more low-key during his tenure, he agrees to help, and also makes himself available to help with Heidi’s assigned housing, a historical home with a few tics.

Vacant for years and with an unclear history, the house has been dormant, until Annie and Garrett stumble onto a holiday-themed scavenger hunt that exponentially boosts their mood about being moved away from their dad and their friends. David’s dad, Wallace (Fred Henderson), gets in on the act, too, helping the kids decipher the clues as they uncover them.

Once they bring Heidi, David, and Linda on board, the mystery deepens as they unearth more history about the house and its former place in the community as a beacon of the holidays. Allan Harmon directs a script by Mark Hefti and a story by Kevin Duda, Drew Gehling, and Robert Bastron. It’s a fun watch, with a sweet, holiday-themed mystery at its core, about finding family in all its forms and reframing and reclaiming a history long thought lost.

Mystery on Mistletoe Lane premieres Thursday at 8 pm/7c on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries in the US and W Network in Canada. It will also be available on various streaming platforms. Here are a couple of sneak peeks.
