SurrealEstate Preview: “I Put a Spell on You”

[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

Something witchy this way comes Wednesday on SurrealEstate as a series of mysterious disappearances runs headlong into Luke’s newest property, while Zooey runs point on a pair of Susan’s clients as she’s practicing some self-care and me time at her creepy new house.

Luke’s latest client is a money-no-object type who has the FU money to back up his desire to buy out and bulldoze a neighboring cottage for a guest house in an all-or-nothing deal. That cottage turns out to belong to Kay (Tara Yelland), an enchanting woman who raises alarms bells for Augie when she trips his latest supernatural detection gadget just as she shows up to hear Luke out on his client’s offer.

Meanwhile’s Susan’s under her own enchantment by her house, which is quite happy — maybe too happy — to have her all to itself as she figures out her next play following last week’s come to Jesus with Luke. That leaves the team to navigate the dynamic with Luke back in charge, albeit more than a little distracted.

Susan’s absence also saddles Zooey with shepherding her clients, Frieda (Heather Phillipps) and Lara (Lonni Patey), around to a bunch of properties before she realizes they’re actually lookie-loos who are unlikely to ever bite on a house. Then she gets a bit of advice from an unlikely source, which becomes a game changer for her — and also a terrifying glimpse at the other side of the realtor world.

Separately, the episode is threaded with a series of abductions of young men out in the woods, some out of the blue and some enticed by a young woman. Augie and Father Phil finally connect the dots and race against a ticking clock — and rising moon — to do what they do best.

Written by Gillian Müller and directed by Danishka Esterhazy, the episode is SurralEsate‘s signature mix of spooky, funny, sassy, and snarky and perfectly timed for Halloween.

SurrealEstate airs Wednesdays at 10 pm/9c on Syfy in the US and CTV Sci-Fi and Crave in Canada. You can catch the first three episodes now streaming on those platforms. ICYMI, our Season 1 and 2 coverage is here. Here’s a preview of “I Put a Spell on You.” Check back after the episode Wednesday for more of my conversation with Esterhazy and showrunner George R. Olson.
