Previewing Field Day

[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

Hallmark Channel wraps up its “Fall Into Love” programming Saturday night with the last fall premiere, Field Day. Rachel Boston, Shannon Chan-Kent, and Carmel Amit star as a trio of moms roped into PTO duty organizing the titular Field Day event.

Boston is Jen, newly arrived to town with her teenage daughter, still shellshocked about the sudden loss of her husband two years earlier and settling into life in a new city where she’s moved to be closer to her parents (Colleen Wheeler and Robert Wisden). Chan-Kent is Kelly, a momfluencer who lives for FOMO experiences she can post about. Amit is Marissa, an attorney pulled between work and her husband and daughter.

Initially thrown together because of the PTO president and resident mean girl, Suzanne (Joceyln Gauthier), the women find their footing with each other and become friends, empowering each other to shift out of their comfort zone. For Jen, that means entertaining the idea of dating Dan (Benjamin Ayres), who runs the school’s PE department. For Kelly and Marissa, that means putting their phones down, forgetting about the photo ops and the missed conference calls, and living in the now.

In the middle of that, they’re also trying to pull their assigned event together with very little support, until they finally work that out, too. But of course the day has a few wrinkles thrown in. It’s sweet friendship story with a few moments of melancholy as the women take ownership of the corners they’ve backed themselves into and decide they’re ready to get out of them. The romance is secondary to the moms’ arc and is a nice bonus once Jen and Dan navigate the will they/should they/why not of it all. David Winning directs a script by Julie Sherman Wolfe.

Field Day premieres Saturday, October 14th, at 8 pm/7c on Hallmark Channel and streaming in the US and W Network in Canada. If you miss it Saturday, you’ll have just three more chances before Countdown to Christmas starts next Friday, so plan accordingly. Here are a couple of sneak peeks.
