Previewing Make Me a Match

[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

Hallmark Channel meets Bollywood, minus the breaking into song, with Make Me a Match, which finds a data-driven matchmaker learning from the old ways of doing it, and finding love for herself in the process.

Make Me a Match

When Calls the Heart‘s Eva Bourne is Vivi, the literal poster child for the matchmaking app she helped design, who finds that her algorithm has failed when her own match flames out at the 18-month mark. Humiliated, she spirals even further when she discovers that’s pretty much the dirty little secret about the app — they’ve made a ton of coin off of short-term relationships.

Determined to do better for her users, she turns to Raina (BSG‘s Rekha Sharma), who’s made a name for herself as a proven, traditional matchmaker by relying on the personality part of the equation instead of the data. Vivi and her BFF and colleague Nella (Rahat Saini) approach Raina about a partnership that will improve the app by leveraging the traditional path to love, and bring Raina into the 21sy century with an app of her own.

There are just two small wrinkles — Vivi has to agree to be the test subject to prove Raina’s methods work, and Raina’s son, Bhumesh (Never Have I Ever‘s Rushi Kota), whom Vivi previously met cute and quickly sussed out were on opposite sides of “how do you find love” equation, will be running that experiment as his mom’s business operations manager. Once Vivi and Bhumesh are thrown together, it becomes clear that Raina’s already made a match in record time.

Heather Hawthorne Doyle directs from a script by Nikhil S. Jayaram. The cast is rounded out with Virgin River‘s Lynda Boyd and Hallmark regular Garwin Sanford as Vivi’s parents. It’s a fun, sweet multicultural romcom to close out Hallmark Channel’s June Weddings month of premieres.

Make Me a Match premieres Saturday at 8 p/7c on Hallmark Channel and streaming on Peacock in the US and on W Network in Canada. Here are a few sneak peeks.
