Previewing Aurora Teagarden Mysteries: “Honeymoon, Honeymurder”

[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

Aurora Teagarden Mysteries is back Sunday night with its 17th installment, “Honeymoon, Honeymurder,” which finds Ro and Nick in the wrong place at the wrong time when they discover a body while on a pre-honeymoon trip to Lizzie’s lakefront cabin.

Delayed from their actual honeymoon to Paris, Lizzie suggests the getaway, and before the happy couple can settle in and unwind from their wedding, an intended leisurely sail instead turns up a murder victim. Not content to let the authorities handle it (obvi), the pair start sleuthing on their own since the deceased’s ex-wife, Sharon (Kendall Cross) just so happens to be their neighbor.

As luck would have it, the small lake community is still under the jurisdiction of Lynn (Miranda Frigon, who returns after skipping the last installment), so she’s leading the investigation. Arthur’s away with their kids, so she brings along the newly promoted Sergeant Heard (Brad Harder) to assist. There’s no shortage of suspects, from the aforementioned ex-wife to the dead man’s colleagues back in town, where Aida is actually consulting to help resolve a security claim that the victim perpetuated.

Sally (Lexa Doig) also sits this one out, so Lizzie fills in as the somewhat unwilling accomplice when Ro steps in where she shouldn’t. And Nick works the school angle when he finds out their neighbor’s teenage son, Jacob (Ben Cockell) is enrolled at his university.

Martin Wood and Teena Booth again return as director and writer, with a story credit to Booth and Jim Head. It’s a fun watch, and it’s really lovely to settle into the new rhythm with the newlyweds, who are eager to start their life together but also readily admit they do love a good mystery and technically they’re together while they meddle, sometimes at their peril.

Also look for a long-overdue and very well done scene between Lynn and Ro where Lynn finally explains why she is the way she is when Ro steps all over her cases. And it arrived literally as I was thinking, we need to move past this now if this is about Arthur. Ro is married. Spoiler alert: it’s actually a much more practical rationale. Yay for that!
