Christmas Romcom Spotlight: Weekend of November 6th

[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

If you’re looking for something a little lighter to soothe your weary soul this weekend, there’s good news. Christmas movies are in full swing all over the TV and streaming, so it’s definitely a buyer’s market. This year, we’re going to do something a little different. Instead of consolidating everything available each weekend for the holiday movie season, we’re going to highlight a few at a time. Fear not, you can find the full listings online–Hallmark Channel is here, Hallmark Movies & Mysteries is here, Lifetime is here, Netflix is here, and Up TV is here.

This weekend, our spotlight covers a few movies with Canadian pedigrees–you know how I am about our friends to the north. Each of these is premiering as noted and will be repeating through the end of the year.

Operation Christmas Drop (Available 11/5 on Netflix)

TVD alumnus and Hallmark Channel newbie Kat Graham takes her romcom energy over to Netflix for a holiday-themed story of Erica, a Congressional aide who travels to a tropical USAF base with the intent of gathering intel to support its closure, only to discover that the base’s residents are spreading the Christmas spirit far and wide. It doesn’t hurt that she warms up to Andrew (Alexander Ludwig), a Captain assigned to be her liaison.

Directed by WCTH (and frequent Hallmark) director Martin Wood and written by the Crossword Mysteries duo of Gregg Rossen and Brian Sawyer, the film also stars Virginia Madsen and familiar #CdnTV faces Trezzo Mahoro, Aaron Douglas, and Janet Kidder.

The Christmas Yule Blog (Premiering at 8 pm/7c, Friday, 11/6, on Lifetime)

Another TVD alumnus, Sara Canning, headlines opposite #CdnTV favorite Zak Santiago in the sweet story of Caroline, a travel blogger assigned to slow her globetrotting roll and instead ride out the holidays with a 12 days of Christmas blog about a quaint New Mexico town. Initially under duress to please her boss, once she befriends widowed single dad Oscar and his son, Sean (Dominic Mariche), and the rest of the family and townspeople, she starts to soften to the slower pace and remember what the holidays used to mean to her. Heather Hawthorn Doyle directs a script by Bob Sáenz. Alison Araya (Jingle Bell Bride) also stars.

Never Kiss a Man in a Christmas Sweater (Premiering at 8 pm/7c, Saturday, 11/7, on Hallmark Channel)

Hallmark regulars Ashley Williams and Niall Matter team up for the first time in a film directed by Allan Harmon (Jingle Bell Bride) and written by Nina Weinman (her third movie with Matter), based on the book by Debbie Johnson. Williams is single mom, Maggie (Williams), who’s navigating her first solo Christmas until an accident begets her Lucas (Matter) as a houseguest.

Initially just visiting town, he ends up staying in her guest house and together they make the best of an unusual, unlikely shared Christmas. Other Hallmarkies include Matter’s Aurora Teagarden co-stars Brendon Zub, Matthew MacCaull, and Ellie Harvie.
