Previewing Hallmark Channel’s 2020 Summer Nights Event

[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

These are unusual times for TV programmers. We’re getting shows and movies moved up in the schedule and one of the effects of that is that Hallmark Channel is rolling with the movies it’s got banked, even if the seasons are a bit mismatched. Since I’m particularly fond of the fall season movies, I’m totally fine with one of the new Summer Nights trio, which premiere every Saturday beginning August 1st at 9 pm/8c, being firmly planted in the fall.

Romance in the Air

First up is Romance in the Air, premiering August 1st, which has one of our favorites, Cindy Busby, back after just two months after Love in the Forecast. This time around, she’s starring opposite Torrance Coombs. They play long ago childhood friends, Eden and Riley, who reconnect when she’s forced to take a hiatus from her job, with the mandate to find her missing spark as a marketing executive.

When she helps him with his business, she remembers why she loves her career and how much she missed her friend and the laid-back vibe of her childhood summer home. And it pays dividends for her two closest friends, too. When I spoke with Busby in June, we chatted about this one, too, and she said she loved working with the small cast and crew in Lake Tahoe.

Love on Harbor Island, premiering August 8th, is the fall-themed movie starring When Hope Calls‘ Morgan Kohan and Marcus Rosner. Lily goes home to help her aunt, again with the mandate to regain her lost edge at work.

As she helps stage the long-loved family inn for sale with the help of Marcus, the pilot who lives on the property and runs a dog adoption agency, she remembers an old love and gains a new one. Frequent Hallmarkie Lucie Guest directs and co-wrote the script with Andrea Shawcross.

Wedding Every Weekend

Wedding Every Weekend, premiering August 15th, was just filmed this summer after Vancouver lifted its lockdown and is already on the schedule in record time. A Godwink Christmas co-stars Kimberley Sustad and Paul Campbell reunite to play wedding buddies Brooke and Nate, who find themselves turning a corner in their surprising and newfound friendship with each successive event.

The movie is promising because it’s a watershed moment for Hallmark to walk the walk in its commitment to diversity onscreen. Of the four weddings, two couples are POC and one couple is two women. And even more bold for the network–ALL of those couples are in the poster. We love that.
