Previewing A Discovery of Witches: Episode 5

[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

A Discovery of Witches

This week on A Discovery of Witches, Matthew and Diana are separated while he mulls the Congregation’s warning and deals with the break-in at the Oxford lab and she gets a deep dive into his backstory from Ysabeau.

A Discovery of Witches

We find out that Matthew can indeed lose his temper in dangerous ways when he confronts Gillian about her alliance with Knox. And he and Miriam are floored when Diana’s test results reveal something remarkable and unprecedented about her lineage. In Venice, the Congregation challenges Baldwin to assert his familial responsibilities, which leads him to leaning on Marcus.

At Sept-Tours, Ysabeau does her level best to change Diana’s mind about loving her son, first with an immersive show-and-tell about how they survive and then with a history lesson about his origin story. Neither does much to dissuade Diana from her path, who also didn’t learn her lesson last week about locked and closed doors in someone else’s home.

Matthew does make it back to France and Diana demands an answer to the question he let hang in the air when he left her. Once that’s settled, he shares his news from the lab and they talk about what all of it means for witches and vampires.

They also finally drop all the formal pretenses and move things to the next level in a very funny, sweet, and smoking scene. Alice Troughton directs a script by Charlene James.

A Discovery of Witches airs Sunday night at 9 pm/8c, simulcast on BBC America and AMC. You can also stream all of the first season now on AMC Premiere, Shudder and Sundance Now. Here are a couple of sneak peeks of episode 5.

Nice comment on the preview. The Congregation though is in Venice, not in Rome.

Sheesh. I did actually know that when I typed Rome. User error. ;D Thank you! Fixed.
