[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

One of the basic principles from the jump of 12 Monkeys derives from what Jones tells Cole on his first splinter, “Everyone you see is already dead.” Now that we’re 42 episodes down the pike from that first episode, the third night of the final season starts to bear out on that assertion, but in ways that hit home for us.

This next-to-last set of episodes pulls absolutely no punches. It’s gory, it’s funny, it’s heartfelt, it’s romantic, and again and again, it’s devastating. There are moments here that are some of my favorite of the show’s entire run. The three hours collectively build toward next week’s finale and also unspool some mega reveals. Here’s a glimpse.

“Daughters”

The first hour parallels the stories of Olivia’s daughter, Emma (Abigail Hardingham), who was raised with a singular focus, and our own Hannah, who’s been sent on a quest and has to decide for herself whether to follow where it leads. Olivia also does her damndest to break Jones.

“Demons”

The second hour dials the action back a half millennium and change to 1491 (in some amazing, jaw-dropping Prague locations) as the crew gets medieval (I’m not alone in making that joke) in their search for the weapon, and they’re soon joined by Titan muddying up the mix. Ben Cross guests as someone VIP to the weapon.

“One More Minute”

The final episode of the night returns to the beginning of the plague in a bit of a nod to the movie, as Hannah (Brooke Williams, who is going to end y’all) and Emma struggle to stay ahead of what Olivia knows and when she knows it. Jennifer has a grief-induced breakthrough that leads to an extraordinary origin story grounded in both the future and the past. Just go ahead and put the box of Kleenex in your lap for the last 30 minutes.
