Preacher Preview: “Damsels”

Preacher slows it down with “Damsels,” in a way that only this show can take it easy. And by slow it down, we mean brain matter, another glimpse into hell, a reprieve from the Saint of Killers, and an underground sex club on Bourbon Street. The music fueled journey to find God finally makes its way to New Orleans, and things definitely get interesting.

But before we get to New Orleans, Eugene makes his first appearance since last season and the whole story about what happened to Tracy Loach is finally revealed. Fiore mentioned Eugene causing trouble in Hell in the last episode, but aside from being trapped in his own worst nightmare (like the Saint in Hell), we see behind the curtain into “real” Hell which includes endless cell-blocks and Hitler as a neighbor. There’s a lot less fire and brimstone than traditional images of Hell conjure up, and more drab, boring, regimented organization that feels oddly more relateable. However, the question remains, in his search to find God, will Jesse ever get Eugene out of Hell?

Tulip’s reluctance about going to New Orleans deepens as her ploy to get Jesse to go to Mexico instead, for Mexi-Jazz, fails. After her violent encounter with her past in “Mumbai Sky Tower,” she’s been on edge, especially since they’re headed directly into her unresolved past. Tulip, who is normally the strong, brash one, is completely out of character since they’re road trip hit The Big Easy.

Jesse knows that something is off, but refuses to play games with Tulip. Cassidy, on the other hand, practically begs to help her, but she won’t let him. Whether it’s her pride, or whether it’s because she knows the type of people she’s in trouble with is unclear, but something is definitely off and the only person who can help her is her.

With his two companions elsewhere, Jesse trolls the bars of Bourbon Street alone in his search for God. As if his night couldn’t get any weirder after coming face-to-face with the mandog, when he can’t find God at the bottom of any of the whiskey glasses he’s downed, he finds himself in the middle of street brawl. The men in white suits belong to a “super secret crypto-religious-fascist organization with designs on total world domination,” as told to Jesse by a mysterious blonde.

Implications about this organization were briefly touched on in the first season, but they are finally formally introduced, including a main big-bad from the comics, Herr Starr. While Jesse’s future has come into play, he’s not immune from his own past coming back to haunt him.

Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy along with his awkward relationship with Dennis all make for an episode heavy with promise. There’s no such thing as coincidence in Preacher, and whether it’s Victor or Jesse’s family, “Damsels” looks to set the stage for a deep dive into what makes our main characters tick.

Preacher is back with “Damsels” on Monday, July 3rd, at 9/8c on AMC.
