The Leftovers Preview: “Crazy Whitefella Thinking”

It was weird last week, and it’s just going to get weirder. This week’s episode of The Leftovers is called “Crazy Whitefella Thinking” and the crazy white fella in question is Kevin Garvey Sr., who we haven’t seen in the flesh since season one. This episode will serve to fill in some of the gaps in regards to what exactly the senior Garvey has been up to since his move to the land down under, and will answer one very important question: Why is Australia important?

And what does he have to do with the women on horseback who killed the wrong Kevin?

For one, we do have confirmation that he’s been staving off the apocalypse, or at least he thinks he is. The last time we saw Kevin Sr. was in Kevin Jr.’s trip to the “other side.” He was in the TV screen in Kevin’s hotel room, his face appearing between snowy flashes of static. If we’re taking Kevin’s hotel escapades at face value, meaning they did really happen (not that we actually have any proof! It could all be a hallucination!), that means Kevin Sr. was somehow able to communicate with the other side, presumably, without having to die.

Last week’s “Don’t Be Ridiculous” was very Nora-centric, and in the same vein, “Crazy Whitefella Thinking” is going to be quite singularly about Kevin Garvey Sr. And Kevin is a character whose been hearing allegedly holy voices for seven years now and we’ve spent no time at all figuring out what’s happening with him. We’re excited for “Crazy Whitefella Thinking” to finally shed some light on what those voices have been saying, and more importantly, what they are going to make him do.

The Leftovers airs Sundays at 9/8c on HBO.
