Black Sails Preview: “XXXIII”

“XXXIII” deserves every second of your undivided attention. Fast talkers, snide remarks, subtle ticks, and enough twists to give you whiplash, this episodes weaves a complex story into a high tension political thriller without so much as a single gunshot.

Picking up exactly where things ended last week, Silver is still reeling from Flint’s singular decision to end this war by forfeiting the cache of gems. With a new plan set in motion, Billy’s reaction is genuine shock and confusion as to how Silver and Flint could have made such a deal knowing that everything they’ve worked toward was because of the buried treasure.

How much longer can this arrangement work? Where Billy and Silver were once united against Flint, the Captain has worked his way back into the fray and is now the wedge between Silver and Billy. The power triangle is beginning to collapse, but who will be the first victim? Much time has been devoted to making sure Silver’s name is the name to fear — but is he ready to assume the role?

As the saying goes, you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink. Despite practically everyone close to him being able to see the power that Silver wields, he himself has yet to seize it. With the cache set to arrive back on Nassau at any moment, now is not the time for a reluctant king. Without Flint to lead in one direction or another, someone else finally steps up to put things into perspective for Long John Silver. Though the delivery is swift and harsh, the message appears to have finally come through loud and clear.

While things are congealing on the beach, Flint and Eleanor speak plainly with each other in the fort. So far, she’s kept her word to keep Flint alive, and even puts on quite the display to prove how serious she is about seeing this war stopped before it gets worse. Old wounds are re-opened and tempers flare, but the fact remains that Flint and Eleanor still have the best poker faces in all of Nassau.

The scale with which the story unfolds is put on full display in “XXXIII” as several vignettes never make the episode feel cluttered, yet are still plentiful with vital information. There’s not a moment of wasted real estate in this episode, and it’s easy to get so pulled in that you find yourself hanging on every word. This marks the halfway point of the final season and it’s building to quite a climax.

Black Sails airs Sunday, February 25th, at 9/8c on Starz.
