[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

First up, some ratings news! Van Helsing pulled close to 900K viewers for each hour of its premiere last week–before L+3 and a reair of the first episode on USA. That’s awesome, especially measured against the Friday summer series (both renewed), which garnered around 600K each. This week’s episode dials up the vampire action and gives Vanessa a very clear view of what the stakes are (no pun intended) for herself and the people who have been surviving, or some semblance of surviving, in real-time while she slept through it.

She also gets a firsthand look at the world outside when she accompanies Axel on a supply run. Over in the vampire world, we find out they’re up to some spectacularly nasty things, the lengths they’ll go to to get hold of Vanessa, and how quickly they moved into the world back when the volcano hit. We spend a little time with Flesh, too, as he reels from being converted and retaining total vampire recall.

It’s another hour that mixes quiet, emotional moments with bursts of violence and gore, but I’m digging the balance. And I’m still just stupid giddy about this cast.

Van Helsing airs at 10/9c Fridays on Syfy. Here’s a sneak peek of “Stay Inside.” Check back at 11/10c for my post-episode conversation with Simon Barry. In case you missed it, my post-premiere chat with him is here, and my chat with Kelly Overton is here.
