Dancing with the Stars “Season 23 Week 3” aka Face-Off Challenge
This week the show debuted something a little different: The Face Off!
Now we have had “Face Offs†before, but let me explain the difference. Because ABC aired some sort of debate (ha ha) that would take much of the network’s time on Monday night (I can’t imagine something more important than DWTS, but I digress), the show could only devote one hour to the dancing competition.
Two couples would go up against each other performing the same type of dance. Then whomever the judges scored higher, would receive immunity and would be automatically safe from elimination. Here’s the thing. How do you pair up everyone when it’s only Week Three? Plus, because there would be no time, each couple would get the judges’ scores but no critique until day two. Following me so far? Well let’s see how the dancers did:
Kenneth “Babyface†Edmonds & Allison Holker
Jana Kramer & Gleb Savchenko
Kenneth “Babyface†Edmonds and Allison Holker
Phone Number: 1-800-868-3402
I thought everything was in time but I felt like Babyface, who has such a cool, smooth demeanor, might have been too cool for a jive. I feel like the pair should have at least earned all 7s but, of course, I’m not a judge. (But I should be!)
Score: Carrie Ann-7, Len-6, Julianne-6, Bruno-6; Total: 25
Judges’ note: They felt that he needed to be sharper with his movement.
Jana Kramer and Gleb Savchenko
Phone Number: 1-800-868-3406
Jana and Gleb were more energetic and, of course, their chemistry was off the charts. But she looked like she was struggling a bit. I know she had an injury last week, but is that hindering her or is it just she struggled with the jive? She still won the round, but it was a close one
Score: Carrie Ann-6, Len-7, Julianne-6, Bruno-7; Total: 26
Judges’ note: She was full of sharp kicks and flicks.
Winners of Immunity: Jana and Gleb
Gov. Rick Perry & Emma Slater
Vanilla Ice & Witney Carson
Dance: Paso Doble
Gov. Rick Perry and Emma Slater
Phone Number: 1-800-868-3410
This Paso Doble was a bit awkward but not the worst I have seen on the show. I think that given he is not a performer he has been doing a decent job. And we all know that Emma is a miracle worker.
Score: Carrie Ann-6, Len-5, Julianne-6, Bruno-6; Total: 23
Judges’ note: They admired him for continuing to give his all.
Vanilla Ice and Witney Carson
Phone Number: 1-800-868-3413
I felt that his musicality was better than last week. He knows how to dance but, as we all know, ballroom and Latin are a bit different then hip-hop or break dancing. He is slowly improving his technique, which he still needs to work on, but over all I enjoy him.
Score: Carrie Ann-6, Len-6, Julianne-5, Bruno-; Total: 23
Judges’ note: They felt he needed more fun too the Paso Doble.
Winners of Immunity: Vanilla Ice and Witney (Len broke the tie)
James Hinchcliffe & Sharna Burgess
Ryan Lochte & Cheryl Burke
Dance: Cha Cha
James Hinchcliffe and Sharna Burgess
Phone Number: 1-800-868-3405
I did not think this was his best dance but he still did well. He’s got the moves but he was a bit stiff and you have to be able to move your hips and shake it. James just has to loosen up with the Latin dances.
Score: Carrie Ann-7, Len-7, Julianne-8, Bruno-7; Total: 29
Judges’ Note: He has a natural understanding of what is required out of him. His footwork needs work.
Ryan Lochte and Cheryl Burke
Phone Number: 1-800-868-3411
Even though I thought James was a bit stiff, I thought Ryan was a little worse for wear in this dance. I’m surprised he is not a little more fluid with his moves. I don’t see a big improvement from last week.
Score: Carrie Ann-6, Len-7, Julianne-6, Bruno-6; Total: 25
Judges’ Note: He needed to do more. It looked like Cheryl was dancing around him.
Winners of Immunity: James and Sharna
Terra Jolé & Sasha Farber
Calvin Johnson Jr. & Lindsay Arnold
Dance: Viennese Waltz
Terra Jolé and Sasha Farber
Phone Number: 1-800-868-3412
This was a stunning dance. She caught the emotions and the musicality of the dance. She really is one of the top dancers and whatever Sasha is doing, it’s really working.
Score: Carrie Ann-8, Len-7, Julianne-8, Bruno-7; Total: 30
Judges’ note: Even though she might have some issues she stretches her arms out like she had the longest arms and her frame was so beautiful. One of her best dances.
Calvin Johnson Jr. and Lindsay Arnold
Phone Number: 1-800-868-3403
This was a fantastic dance. For someone that was told he couldn’t dance, I’m not seeing this being the case. He showed his elegant and charming side.
Score: Carrie Ann-8, Len-8, Julianne-8, Bruno-8; Total: 32
Judges’ Note: This week proved, not only is he supposed to be in the competition, he can dance.
Winners of Immunity: Calvin and Lindsay (I don’t know if I agree)
Amber Rose & Maksim Chmerkovskiy
Maureen McCormick and Artem Chigvintsev
Amber Rose and Maksim Chmerkovskiy
Phone Number: 1-800-868-3401
I feel like she was holding back a little. She is a good dancer but it’s like she is guarding herself and she really can’t let herself go. She needs to let loose more and put her walls all the way down or she might not make it after next week. And it was a lot of booty in the dance! She should have rocked out harder.
Score: Carrie Ann-7, Len-6, Julianne-6, Bruno-6; Total: 25
Judges’ Note: Amber came out and gave it her all. It wasn’t the proper salsa.
Maureen McCormick and Artem Chigvintsev
Phone Number: 1-800-868-3409
Maureen looked like she was having fun. She seemed more relaxed and I thought it was a proper salsa. I think it was Maureen’s best dance so far. She just needs to keep improving.
Score: Carrie Ann-7, Len-7, Julianne-7, Bruno-7; Total: 28
Judges’ Note: It was a proper Salsa.
Winners of Immunity: Maureen and Artem
Laurie Hernandez & Valentin Chmerkovskiy
Marilu Henner & Derek Hough
Laurie Hernandez and Valentin Chmerkovskiy
Phone Number: 1-800-868-3407
All I can say is that it was the best dance of the night. Apparently Carrie Ann spotted a lift but I didn’t see it on Monday but I certainly did on the playback Tuesday. It was the first time she had to do a more serious dance and she did it.
Score: Carrie Ann-7, Len-8, Julianne-8, Bruno-8; Total: 31
Judges’ Note: It was excellent. She had great intensity. She had a few little things with her chin being tucked under. And they had a lift. Carrie Ann did not like that.
Marilu Henner and Derek Hough
Phone Number: 1-800-868-3408
As Len would say, this was a proper tango. It was different from what Laurie and Val did but I still thought she was spot on and she should have gotten 8s. Marilu is a class act and she and Derek have a fantastic partnership. But let’s face it. Derek is good with any partner.
Score: Carrie Ann-7, Len-7, Julianne-7, Bruno-7; Total: 28
Judges’ Note: Great tango. There is finesse to the way she moves but she got nervous and got a bit brittle by the end and that’s why Laurie and Val got immunity.
Winners of Immunity: Laurie and Val
After Monday the celebrities in jeopardy were: Amber, Marilu, Babyface, Rick, Terra and Ryan.
On the second night, we got to hear the judges comment on the couples from the Monday night show, which I really enjoyed. Then one judge would sum up how they felt the couples did. There were music acts and dances but we know what we wanted to hear: who would be next to leave the dance floor?
Tom introduced two couples at a time so they could find out if they were safe or still in jeopardy. They started with Amber & Maks and Marilu & Derek. The first couple safe was Marilu and Derek. Amber and Maks were in jeopardy.
The next two couples were Rick & Emma and Babyface & Allison. The next couple safe was Babyface and Allison. Rick and Emma were told they were still in jeopardy.
Tom announced that Len would be gone for a couple of weeks since he does the original British version of the show. The troupe did a little dance in his honor. I’m a little sad about this but the man is getting older and he can’t fly back and forth every week. Len said he would keep tabs on what was going on.
The next two couples to find out if they were safe or in jeopardy were Ryan & Cheryl and Terra & Sasha. The next couple who was safe was Ryan and Cheryl. Terra and Sasha remained in jeopardy.
So it would come down to Amber & Maks, Rick & Emma and Terra & Sasha. The first couple that was safe was Terra & Sasha.
It came down to Amber & Maks and Rick & Emma.
The couple leaving would be Rick & Emma. I think that was the right call, America.
Tom: “There’s not going to be that much chemistry on the debate.â€
Tom: “I like her outfit. It’s like the Real Housewives of Hazzard.â€
Laurie: “I have to look like I’m smelling a really good quesadilla.â€
Tom: “It was like three hostage mimes and Bruno just kept talking.â€
Tom: “I’ll be in the parking lot.â€
Bruno: “Hail Caesar!â€
Vanilla Ice: “Paso Yoplait?â€
Len: “What does Vanilla have on his head?â€
Terra: “Sometimes you don’t want light up shoes.â€
Tom: “People wonder why I’m never late for work.â€
Kim: “Do you think that Len has a soft spot for you?â€
Tom: “Calvin’s sister who thought he couldn’t dance has a new book coming out, It’s an all Crow Diet.â€
Rick: “I have lived my life in jeopardy.â€
Next week is something else the show has never done before: It’s Cirque Du Soleil week! I wonder if someone in the competition might have the upper hand ? Maybe someone like a certain Olympic athlete that has gold and silver medals in her possession? Val must have done a happy dance when he heard about this.
Do you think the right couple went home? Is your favorite pair still in the game? We’ll see you next week.
Dancing with the Stars Season 23 airs Monday nights at 8/7c on ABC.

3 Moments of Goodness from Brooklyn Nine-Nine “Johnny and Dora”
