[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

The problem with slow burns is that sometimes a show takes so much sweet bloody time to get where you really want it to go that by the time it does, you don’t really give a damn anymore, or you’re furious that they got there and then they’re done for the season.

I haven’t given up on Penny Dreadful, but I do feel like we’ve sort of squandered a fair portion of the season on extraneous plot details that I wasn’t really tethered to, and now, with only three episodes left, they finally have their act together. (We’re also still waiting on a renewal.)

This week, we move closer to the show I love, although I called it correctly on one key thing that I will not spoil here.

The upside is that there is finally a stated declaration of love, and a new urgency to get back to London after Ethan has heart-to-hearts with his two surviving fathers.

In London, Vanessa is basking in the glow of her ill-advised dalliance when a conversation with Catriona finally wakes her up.

Before that, we get a lovely scene with John and Vanessa where she guides him in matters relating to his family. Her advice is kind, and bears out in a wonderful, quiet way.

On the less quiet side of town, Dorian grows weary of Lily and her expanding tribe of prostitutes.
