[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

With only four episodes left this season, Penny Dreadful moves into hyper-speed with an hour that updates all of our core arcs, and admirably does so without feeling like it’s overlong. It’s nice to have the balance after the last couple of installments kept the plotting separate. (I’m just going to disregard Ethan and Hecate’s entanglement entirely because WHAT DID I SAY ABOUT ETHAN AND VANESSA?). Ahem.

In New Mexico, Ethan is dealing with the gauntlet thrown by his father, who blames him for the massacre of their family. It’s not long before that dance card gets exponentially more full, and Malcolm continues to prove it’s unwise to underestimate him, gentlemen or not.

In London, Vanessa calls on Mr. Lyle, who has unwelcome news. He does, however, put her onto the acquaintance of Catriona (Perdita Weeks), a like-minded woman who can potentially help with all things Dracula. We only have a couple of scenes between her and Vanessa, but I am already down with this friendship.

Unfortunately, Vanessa also makes a spectacularly bad decision at the suggestion of an unaware Dr. Seward. On the other side of town, John is still shadowing his family, and his seemingly dying son.

Things are getting complicated at Casa Gray as Lily expands her army and Dorian wonders exactly where, and if, he fits, and he may gain an unlikely ally when Victor joins Vanessa in the school of galactically stupid errors in judgment.
