[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

Hallmark Channel starts it annual June Weddings movie rollout this weekend with original films Friday and Saturday night. The first one out of the gate is Wedding Bells, starring Hallmark staples Danica McKellar, Kavan Smith, and Bruce Boxleitner.

The story follows Molly and Nick, who team up to salvage the dream wedding of their best friends, Amy and James, when it’s torpedoed by a Ponzi scheme that also happens to shutter Nick’s restaurant. Although they’re relative strangers to each other, Molly and Nick dive right in to help their friends, who’ve previously tried and failed to pair them up.

That changes in short order when Amy and James return to the city, leaving Nick and Molly to put together the perfect wedding in six short days. They find a way to merge their personalities and styles for the wedding and beyond, while Nick also sorts through the residual baggage of his estrangement from his dad, whose long-ago mothballed inn becomes the new location for the wedding.

This is another movie cut from the cloth of the recent slate that leans a little more toward the wistful, centering on two people who put success before socializing and now wonder if that ship might have sailed. Since it’s a Hallmarks movie, we know it hasn’t. It thematically melds the network’s familiar themes of food and weddings in a sweet outing that’s a great start to a month of wedding movies.

Smith is one of my favorites from way back (see Growing the Big One), who’s gained a following with his recurring role on When Calls the Heart, and McKellar works a lot for the network. She and Smith click nicely together. Glad to see Boxleitner, too, as Hallmark continues, as promised, to populate projects with Cedar Cove alumni. Tammy Gillis (Unleashing Mr. Darcy and Signed, Sealed, Delivered) and Christopher Russell (Merry Matrimony) play the betrothed.

Wedding Bells airs Friday at 9/8c on Hallmark Channel. Here’s a sneak peek.
