We have to be honest: We didn’t think we would watch this season of So You Think You Can Dance. We’ve been fans since the beginning, but we were pretty sure this “kid edition” wouldn’t be for us. We guess the joke’s on us for not believing in Nigel Lythgoe and the rest of the producers (as well as these dancers), because we loved the Season 13 premiere. This feels like the creative rebirth and reinvention the show needed.

The way the show introduces these kids to us is a little different (and a lot refreshing) and we feel like we really get to know their personalities. We know that shouldn’t really matter in a dance competition, but we don’t care. These kids are great and so incredibly talented.

Los Angeles is the first audition city. So what can you expect from the premiere? Some truly amazing dancing including:

  • An animator whose audition goes surprising well, considering a rough start.
  • A ballet dancer so mature and so expressive, it’ll take your breath away.
  • A hip-hop dancer with a slightly tragic past, who dances his heart out.
  • A Russian ballroom dancer with a dynamite routine and a personality to match.
  • A very tall contemporary dancer who makes a bold statement — with her dancing and her words.
  • A pint-sized couple that asks for another chance and gets it.
  • Some truly cute and supportive parents, who may or may not mortify their children.
  • A Maddie Ziegler cameo, of sorts.
  • Judges Nigel, Paula Abdul and Jason Derulo giving some some great critiques and advice.
