[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

Penny Dreadful switches gears this week with an exquisite set piece episode that focuses entirely on Vanessa’s recollections from being confined to the Banning Clinic for five months.

It’s a very quiet, thoughtful episode comprised completely of two-person conversations. If Eva Green isn’t nominated for the episode, the Emmy voters are legitimately out of touch with one of the most astounding performances on television right now. Rory Kinnear and Patti LuPone do equally lovely work.

I adore that John Logan created this flashback of a Vanessa and John that neither one remembers, or associates with each other, in the present timeline, but that at two very different points in their lives, with very different personalities, they were still vitally important to each other.

I’m also very grateful this is not a new confinement, although the memories are real for Vanessa. I didn’t want to see her locked up and alone again, with the rest of the Dreadfuls (who we do not see this week) galavanting around London and the American West on their own quests.

Here are a few sneak peeks of “A Blade of Glass,” which airs Sunday at 10/9 c on Showtime.
