[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

While I fully realize TV shows are not written expressly for us, or for me (I KNOW, RIGHT?), I do get disheartened when I’ve gravitated toward a particular arc in a show and that’s the one arc that TPTB decide to move away from. Case in point, I’m not at all feeling the decision to put Vanessa and Ethan on separate continents, but that’s where we find ourselves, and it looks like that’s where we’re going to live for a while in the third season of Penny Dreadful.

As a rational viewer, I take heart in all the other magnificent, rich storytelling going on, but I nonetheless feel that void. In the second episode of the season, we spend time with our favorite batshit unhinged couple, Dorian and Lily, as they begin orchestrating their nefarious plan with a new acquisition, while Victor tells Jekyll to put up or shut up about what he says they can do, and then proves in horrifying detail that he can deliver. Victor also takes a moment to show us, in a scene with Harry Treadaway that will break your heart, that revenge is nowhere in play for him on this quest.

Vanessa works with Dr. Seward, who again encourages her to do something she hasn’t done before and that takes her back to the Museum, where she’s emboldened to properly befriend the good Dr. Sweet. Renfield betrays his position in Seward’s office to meets his new Master’s request.

In the New Mexico territory, Ethan waits out a full moon so he can make his escape. Luckily for him, there’s help in town and on the way as Malcolm and Kaetenay head toward him on a freighter.

It’s a full hour, with a terrific final moment that builds on the reveal at the end of the premiere that Dracula’s back in town.

Penny Dreadful airs at 10/9c Sundays on Showtime. Here are a few sneak peeks of Sunday’s episode, and new teasers of the season.
