[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

We’re finally in the home stretch of our Penny Dreadful hiatus, with the third season set to return to Showtime this Sunday.  I’ve already seen it, and it’s SO GOOD. Y’all know that I’m super spoiler-averse, so consider this a very light fairy dusting of the fabulousness of the premiere.

We pick up, after the mother of all previouslies, with an indeterminate amount of time having passed since the finale that scattered the cast to the four winds. It’s been long enough for Vanessa to descend into a state of detached squalor, Ethan to almost be back in New Mexico, Victor to be very nearly over the edge but miraculously not yet dead, and John to be ice locked at one edge of the world while Sir Malcolm remains willingly at the other. We do not see Dorian and Lily.

While we are introduced to our core cast in a meandering fashion over the course of the hour, we also meet a few deliciously familiar names of the Victorian horror era, which I will not spoil for you here. And the wonderful Mr. Lyle intervenes to help Vanessa and refers her to an unorthodox therapist who is eerily familiar and strangely comforting to her.

I have missed these folks. I am so glad they’re back. Be warned, though. It’s going to be a woefully short season of just nine episodes, so I expect everything to count. And I very much hope we get Vanessa and Ethan back on the same continent sooner than later. I do not want this to be another of my misguided shows that thinks separating the two characters everyone wants together (in some form or another) builds interest. It does not. I trust John Logan to be smarter than that. I hope I’m right. This is holding me for now.

Penny Dreadful returns at 10/9c this Sunday on Showtime. Here are a few sneak peeks, and if you just can’t wait for the whole episode, you can watch it now below.
