[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

This week on Bates Motel, we vault headlong into Norman’s downward spiral as it’s wholly unclear what exactly transpired at the end of last week’s premiere, but regardless, Norma is desperately trying to piece that together while retaining her own safety, and sanity.

It’s a claustrophobic hour as we see, for the first time, that Norma is very, very afraid. She’s pedaling as fast as she can, but she does finally get some help. Just not from Dylan, who’s still in Portland with Emma. Her Dad has a heart-to-heart with him that’s sort of abrupt but wholly necessary if Dylan is serious about dating an Emma who is not dying. And we get a succinct Romero again telling someone unaware of what he can actually do exactly how things are going to be. It’s a thing of beauty.

There are some terrifically, terrifyingly staged scenes of Norman deep in unhinged conversation, reflection, and paranoia, and then completely normal. Freddie Highmore is doing phenomenal work as ever, especially as Norman becomes exponentially more complicated.

Bates Motel airs at 9/8c Mondays on A & E. Here’s a sneak peek of “Goodnight, Mother.”
