Bates Motel Preview: “A Danger to Himself and Others”

[Warning: General spoilers ahead]

We’re back! Bates Motel returns Monday night with a taut premiere that picks up right where the finale left off, which I am very glad about. I didn’t want any sort of time jump at all.

That means Norman is AWOL and Norma is frantic to find him, and Emma’s surgery is looming, which brings with it a blast from her past. The tone is much more dire as Norma finally starts to realize that maybe she can’t do all of this on her own, and Dylan clues her in that he also has other things going on his life. It’s a much darker premiere, and while there’s hope in some of it, other events are completely devoid of it. We also catch up with Romero, who’s dealing with his own recent Bob baggage.

It’s a packed hour with a bonkers final scene that will have you holding your breath. Honestly, I was exhausted for Norma by the end of it, but riveted because we know where this is all going. The premiere (plus last season’s finale) feels like this is the very intentional kickoff to Norman’s complete unraveling. This looks like it could be the season where the gloves really come off, and a desperate Norma asks for help that may be too late in coming.
