[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

Tonight’s The X-Files is equal parts a monster of the week story and a trip down memory lane for the OG fans. If this one doesn’t net nominations for Gillian and David, the voters are dead inside. I’m guessing this would fall under a “limited series” now, or however they fudge the placements, but both of them do really lovely work that will be particularly resonant for fans who were around in the aftermath of Scully’s disappearance and her coma in “One Breath.”

The monster of the week is an overly aggressive sort, so we get a fair share of gore as he works his way through the folks in Philadelphia who’ve had a habit of mistreating the homeless population–and Mulder gets the chance to work in a few digs about the state of their basketball team.

Just as they kick off the investigation, Scully is called away for a family emergency, and it brings up a trove of memories (and flashback scenes) related to her own hospitalization after she went missing in season two, and her lingering emotions about surrendering William. All of this makes for some exquisitely quiet moments as Mulder puts down the case long enough to be there for Scully when she needs him.
