In the midst of reruns, a fresh new summer series starts tonight that, at first blush, seems to be a Mad Men meets Desperate Housewives– which to me sounds like a pretty good show! But ABC’s The Astronaut Wives Club is even better than I expected as it takes you back to the exciting era of the space race and to a time where an astronaut wife’s public image was one of NASA’s main concerns.
Based on Lily Koppel’s New York Times best-selling book by the same name, the show takes a look behind the scenes at the lives of America’s Mercury Seven astronauts and their families. As the space race hurtled their men into the stratosphere, these women became like American royalty, having to keep poised under pressure and put a smile on their face even when things at home weren’t picture perfect. The nation and the press were infatuated with these wives, turning them into household names and even fashion icons. Check out this series premiere trailer:
The Astronaut Wives Club looks to be a fun diversion this summer. It captures the essence of a bygone era and adds another dimension to the first families of space. Behind the “perfect in pearls†image were women dealing with divorce, infidelity, death and the reality that if their public image was found tarnished in some way, their husbands could miss a chance to fly in space.
