[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

Penny Dreadful roars back tonight, and it pulls no punches with a balls-out introduction (or re-introduction) to our new villain, who’s gunning for Vanessa (again) because last season’s efforts failed. I’m not going to lie, that part is a little disappointing. On the upside, the gang’s all here (sans Dorian just yet) to help. The premiere misses no beats, resuming the terror and gore and drama with moments of heart that it does very, very well. I’m very happy it’s back, even if I did have to look away a few times.

As a reminder from our teaser piece, here’s what to expect in the premiere: Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) is barraged by an onslaught of disturbing occult images brought on by the mysterious Evelyn Poole (Helen McCrory). Because of the massacre he committed in the Mariner’s Inn, Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) decides to leave London. Under pressure from The Creature (Rory Kinnear), Dr. Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway) works to bring Brona (Billie Piper) back to life. After Mina’s funeral, Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton) returns to London to learn that a whole new evil is hunting Vanessa.
