Secrets and Lies Preview: “The Son”

[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

Things took an interesting turn on last week’s Secrets and Lies when the promos again faked us out and we discovered Cornell may be determined but she’s not dirty. Ben’s lead on that story was the reporter, Fenton, who, we  found out has been working Ben all along–he had a source inside the police lab and leaked Ben’s paternity. When Ben accidentally reveals that gal’s identity in front of Cornell, she hilariously backs away from her–I loved that.

On the homefront, Ben implodes his marriage when Christy threatens him one more time and he just opens the door and tells her to go. She does, with the girls, while the neighbors stand in their doorways clutching their wine and gawking–on Christmas Eve. Before that, Natalie comes to him and tells him she knows he’s the stronger parent to her and she worries who will keep her in line if he goes away. They don’t get any closure on that discussion.

And in a weird moment, Abby doesn’t hug Ben right away when he comes in and she says it’s because Christy told her he should hug her first (random and weird and I guess a roundabout way of saying she’s too old for that?). Cornell later shows up with dashcam footage from his cab ride home on the night he doesn’t remember and it clearly shows him stumbling across the street to Jess’s front door and not his own, which explains the sex scene that’s been teased all season but hasn’t yet aired.

Here’s what to expect tonight: All alone on Christmas Eve, Ben must face the fact that Detective Cornell has uncovered damning video evidence that practically guarantees he will be charged with Tom’s death — unless he can remember what happened that fateful night. Along with Dave, a desperate Ben retraces his steps, searching for any clue that might jog his memory and clear his name. Meanwhile, the Crawford’s marriage is falling into total disarray, and Natalie and Abby are caught in the crossfire of Christy and Ben’s increasingly nasty verbal battles. Ben’s lawyer, John Garner, comes up with an alternative theory of the murder, which leads to a shocking discovery and more secrets and lies from those closest to Ben.

I am so digging Ryan Phillippe on my TV every week. I hope he lands on another series next season. Secrets and Lies airs Sundays at 9/8c on ABC. Here are a couple of sneak peeks.
